Embracing the Motherhood in Healthy Way…
Beyond woman, there’s one more word.. Mother! Being able to nurture a life inside you is an unfathomable feeling as well as responsibility.
To ensure safe pregnancies, we need to know about medical problems related to them. Let us discuss few of them today.
Pre eclampsia: It is when there is high blood pressure and possibly protein in your urine, during pregnancy or after delivery. It generally happens after the 20th week of pregnancy. Sometimes,it can occur after delivery. There is an increased risk for organ damage/failure, preterm birth, pregnancy loss, and stroke. Eclampsia is a progression of preeclampsia, where high blood pressure leads to seizures, which may lead to coma or death. If you notice, persistent headache, abnormal swelling in your hands and face, sudden weight gain, changes in your vision, pain in abdomen, consult your doctor immediately.
Gestational Diabetes : This occurs when blood sugar levels are found to be high during pregnancy. Commonly, this is discovered using screening with the glucose challenge screening test around 24 to 28 weeks of pregnancy, followed by a diagnostic test called the oral glucose tolerance test. There is risk of pre eclampsia, cesarean section, and can lead to macrosmia ( very large baby). If you notice, repeated urinary infections, unusually increased thirst, easy fatiguability, consult your doctor.
Anemia : lt occurs when your red blood cell count is low. Iron deficiency anemia is the most common type of anemia. Pregnant women need more iron than normal for the increased amount of blood in their body and for their developing child. Symptoms include feeling tired or weak, looking pale, dizziness or experiencing shortness of breath. Your doctor will help you with the supplements to increase the haemoglobin.
Post Partum Depression : Women experience depression and anxiety, as well as other mental health conditions, during pregnancy and after the baby is born. These conditions can have significant effects on the health of the mother and her child. Hence seeking help is important.
Thyroid Disorders : We have discussed signs and symptoms in previous article. They can get aggravated during pregnancy and cause complications in mother and developmental problems in the baby. Sometimes, the thyroid becomes swollen in the first year after giving birth, this is called postpartum thyroiditis. It can cause your thyroid to be overactive, underactive and even a combination of both.
All the above problems can be dealt and sorted by
• Regular prenatal check ups
• Keeping a track of sugars, Bp, thyroid, hemoglobin levels etc
• Balanced and healthy diet
• Regular exercise, physical and mental
• Reach out to your doctor in case of any doubts, without hesitation.
• Most importantly, awareness about all the pregnancy related disorders.
