Thyroid is one gland in the body, which aids the metabolism of our body and keeps our energy alive. But sometimes, when it is not functioning well, this metabolism gets badly affected. Thyroid problems are more common in females than males. One in eight women will develop thyroid problems during her lifetime.
Inappropriate functioning of thyroid can lead to problems in major milestones of a woman’s physiology.
⁃ menstruation (irregular period cycles, either heavy or very less bleeding)
⁃ in getting pregnant ( infertility issues, difficult ovulation)
⁃ during pregnancy ( can affect health of mother and baby)
Hypothyroidism means slow functioning of the gland leading to insufficient production of thyroid hormone leading to slowing of metabolism of the body.
Commonly, one starts feeling sluggish in activities without any obvious reason. Other symptoms are,
- Weight gain, even though you are not eating more food
- Constipation
- Dry and pale skin
- Thinning of hair
- Slow heart rate
- A hoarse voice
- Heavy bleeding during periods
- Feeling abnormally cold
Hypothyroidism can cause increase in bad cholesterol, increasing the risk of heart disease. Treatment includes external supplements of thyroid hormone as prescribed by your doctor.
Hyperthyroidism means overactive thyroid gland, which produces excess amounts of thyroid hormone, causing metabolism to speed up. Symptoms include,
- Eating more than usual, yet losing weight
- Palpitations
- Feeling nervous or irritable
- Trembling of hands
- Increased sweating
- Feeling hot abnormally
- Muscle weakness
- Diarrhea
- Fewer and lighter menstrual periods than normal
- Bulging of the eyes
Hyperthyroidism increases the risk of osteoporosis significantly. Treatment includes, antithyroid medicines, certain medicines to slow down heart rate and sometimes surgical removal of thyroid.
Both the conditions are medically treatable. Both conditions can land up in crises if not treated timely.
